Self-exclusion and limits: OASIS and the tools around it
Stepping away from gambling works best when the step is hard to undo in a weak moment. In Germany there is a tool built exactly for that: the OASIS player blocking system. Around it sit smaller tools — limits, reminders, cooling-off periods — that help you stay in control without stopping completely. This page explains how the pieces differ, which of them an operator must offer, and where the protection ends.
OASIS: one block for all legal operators
OASIS (Spielersperrsystem) is a nationwide, cross-operator blocking system. A block registered in OASIS does not only apply to the casino where you happened to ask for it — it applies to every operator connected to the system. Under the German framework, connection to OASIS is mandatory for legal operators, meaning those on the official whitelist of the Gemeinsame Glücksspielbehörde der Länder (GGL). The effect is that a block cannot be sidestepped by registering with the next brand on the list.
We deliberately do not describe the application process, forms or durations here: those details are set by the system and can change. For the current procedure, rely on the information published by the GGL and by the operators connected to OASIS — not on third-party summaries, including this one.
Where OASIS stops
The strength of OASIS is also its boundary. It covers operators that are connected to it, and the obligation to connect applies to operators with German permission. An operator that is not on the whitelist is not bound to that obligation, so a block in OASIS cannot be expected to stop you there. That is not a technicality — for someone who has blocked themselves on purpose, sites outside the German system are the obvious gap. If you have chosen a block, the honest advice is to stay away from operators you cannot find on the whitelist, and to use device-level blocking software as a second layer.
Whether the operator behind Razed is on the whitelist is not something we assert either way. Check the list at gluecksspiel-behoerde.de and compare the company name with the Impressum of the site before relying on any protection.
Smaller tools: limits, reminders, cooling-off
Not every situation calls for a full block. Most casino accounts offer some combination of the following, and they are worth setting up before you ever need them:
- Deposit limit. Caps how much you can pay in over a day, a week or a month. For operators with German permission, implementing deposit limits is mandatory; elsewhere it is voluntary. Set yours below whatever maximum is allowed.
- Loss and wager limits. Where offered, these cap net losses or total stakes within a period — useful if you tend to recycle winnings until they are gone.
- Session limits and reality checks. A pop-up after a set time showing how long you have played and what the balance did. Small, but effective against losing track of time.
- Cooling-off / time-out. A short suspension of the account. It applies only to that single account at that single operator — unlike OASIS.
- Account self-exclusion. A longer closure at one operator. Again: one operator only.
Which of these tools Razed's account area provides, and how long each lasts, can only be seen in the account settings themselves. Check them before your first deposit, not after a bad evening.
Raising a limit versus lowering it
A good limit is easy to lower and slow to raise. Many operators apply reductions immediately and increases only after a waiting period — a design that protects your calm self from your impatient self. If an operator lets you raise a limit instantly and without any friction, treat that as information about how seriously it takes the tool.
Choosing the right step
If you are only worried about the odd long session, a session reminder and a lower deposit limit may be enough. If you have broken your own budget several times, a cooling-off period gives breathing room. If you notice that you keep coming back despite deciding otherwise, OASIS is the tool designed for that — and it is worth combining with talking to someone.
Help alongside the tools
Blocking tools stop the access; they do not address why the urge is there. The BZgA offers a counselling line on gambling addiction, 0800 1 37 27 00, free and anonymous.
